Sometimes, the promise of "Ready to Wear" fails, because the clothes are not ready for the real world. Thankfully, Julien MacDonald is not playing the dressing up game. His third Menswear Collection, for Spring Summer 2017, is very ready indeed. It is memorable men's style that is ready to put on.
Two key items show Julien's intent; his sturdy black investment boots and the fitted black trousers designed with or without zips, buttons or a subtle sash belt. On top of this base, sits the intricate tops with encrusted and metallic decoration, artfully done, in silver or gold on black or on white. There are the recurring rich patterns reflecting nature, which is becoming an in-house theme. A cowboy and horse-riding theme runs through the collection, reflected in the tapered equestrian-type trousers and a few cowboy hats. These add playfulness to the mix. There are also the jumpsuits, which have great versatility and youthful presence to sell these clothes to a range of younger men.
Julien Macdonald's Autumn Winter 2016 collection is dark and moody, providing a playground for goths, rockers, bikers and the forever-wearing-black. In contrast, Spring and Summer 2017 is more open, brighter and full of a wry and knowing sense of humour.
